Obituary of Sheila C. Monheim

MONHEIM - Sheila C. (nee Miller) Peacefully, and on her own terms, surrounded by her family, Sheila Carol (Miller) Monheim, 89, departed this life on May 23rd to rejoin James, her late husband of 61 years. She was born May 6, 1932 in Lackawanna, NY, to the late Francis M. and Sarah E. (Kurtz) Miller. Shortly after graduating from the original Immaculata Academy in Hamburg, NY, she traveled to Maryland, borrowed a wedding dress, and married her sweetheart Jim before he deployed to Korea. They eventually settled in West Seneca, NY, where they lived for nearly 40 years. Sheila then embarked with Jim on their retirement adventure in a new home in Oro Valley, AZ, where she shared his appreciation of all things Southwest for 20 years before returning to WNY after his passing. In addition to raising her family, Sheila worked for a number of years outside the home, most notably as an assembler for Fisher-Price Toys in East Aurora, NY. She was a Girl Scout leader, a Cub Scout den mother, a PTA member, and a faithful communicant of St. Bonaventure Church and later Santa Catalina Church (AZ). She had a lifelong interest in needlework, arts and crafts, gardening and flowers, home decorating, and delved into bible study and genealogy. Sheila was a loving mother and strong role model to her six children, Zoe Ann (Greg) Kaminski of Farmington, CT, Valerie Anderson of West Seneca, NY, Jeffrey Monheim (Mary Ann Gurbacki) of Amherst, NY, Joseph (Margaret) Monheim of Buffalo, NY, Sally (Earl) Malone of Depew, NY, and Roseann (Mark) Martin of Purcellville, VA. She cherished all of their families, which included 24 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren (to whom she was affectionately known as “GG”) and two great-great grandchildren. Her extended family had included 10 cousins, 17 brothers- and sisters-in-law, and 45 nieces and nephews. She is survived by her sisters Judith Winnert and Rebecca Moore, sisters-in-law Ruth Monheim and Nancy Monheim, and several cousins. She was predeceased by her brother Francis M. Miller, Jr., and granddaughter Jennifer Monheim. There will be no calling hours. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, May 28th at 11 a.m. at St. John Vianney Church, 2950 Southwestern Blvd., Orchard Park, NY, followed by interment at Holy Cross Cemetery, Lackawanna, NY. Attendees are asked to wear a mask and follow COVID-19 safety protocols. The family wishes to thank the staff of GreenField Manor and Court of Lancaster, where she enjoyed living since 2015, and Hospice & Palliative Care (Buffalo) for their caring support.
